This series is focused on the small, unconscious gestures and moments of spectators and players at a rugby tournament. It examines the seemingly inconsequential happenings that go on in the background, the sub-story of a day at rugby tournament.
The snapshots are taken at close range with a high zoom to exclude distracting features such as identity, and to focus on the detail of the subject and its meaning and importance within the context of the narrative.
My inspirations for my technique include Martin Parr, Paul Graham, and David Goldblatt. I started with following a set of people throughout their day at the tournament as Graham does in his Pepsi Walkers series. Then I focused in on small parts and gestures to convey my meaning as Goldblatt does in the series we saw on exhibit in the Victoria and Albert Museum. After the photos were taken, I then used high saturation, vibrant colors, and sharp contrasts and clarity in my editing in imitation of Martin Parr’s work.
The overall affect is a series of striking pictures that reveal intimate moments in people’s lives and tell the backstage story of what goes on at a tournament besides the actual games.
